Potawatomi SP ski report, 1/16/2016

Trails at Pot Park are in good to very good condition. With another 8-12″ of snow they would be in excellent condition. Tracks were reset on the Green Trail today and the skate lane on all other trails were groomed. The Blue Trail has some thin spots but nothing bare. The Black and Red Trails have the best snow cover and are in very good condition. Hadn’t even finished grooming today and I found hiker’s foot prints. If you see hikers PLEASE remind them the ski trails are not open for hiking.

Conditions Skating: Very good Classic: Very good

The park received 2.5 inches of snow on 1/11. The skate lane and classic track were re groomed on 1/12 on the blue red and black trails. The 2 snowfalls and the 2 groomings this week have improved the trails considerably. The skate lanes are well covered much leveler with firm base and great glide. The classic track is solid and fast.

There remain a few areas of bumpiness and thin snow, but no bare spots or exposed ice. These are the best conditions here so far this season. Great job grooming Leif! The green start area trails remain poor. Start your ski by parking at the area near the Group Campground.

One inch of snow fall today during my ski today. The skate lane was groomed yesterday and has set up well just about everywhere. There are some soft spots and thin areas, but downhills are dreamy smooth gliding without bare spots or footprints. The classic track has been set since the last report and has set up well with great glide even at 9F temps. The snow depths are less on the higher terrain east of the observatory; so there are thin areas with some exposed grass on the skate and classic track. The classic track is shallow and softer here. Rate skating good everywhere and classic good on the lower terrain and fair on the upper. This trail system gets daily attention, considering the recent thaw and freeze and light snowfalls it helped make it a fun ski today. Temps tomorrow will approach 30F. If you decide to come here to ski then stop by the maintenance building between 1pm and 3:30pm to find out more about our Ski for Free program. Reminder, Full Moon Night Ski at Crossroads on Jan 24.

Trail conditions – fair to good, very good in many areas

2″ of moderately dry new snow was blended with the previous 2″ of wetter snow over the frozen base following the meltdown of a few days ago. This resulted in a fairly firm base and mostly full depth tracks, relatively free of woods debris. Pole plant areas have firmed up. There are a few areas with a little dirt at the bottom of the track. As in past trail reports, we continue to struggle with hikers and snowshoers walking on the trails. Skiers are invited to let non-skiers know, gently, that groomed trails are for skiers only. Information on the hiking and snowshoeing trails at Whitefish Dunes State Park is available at the park office. Whitefish Dunes is groomed for classic only.

Crossroads Ski Report 1-12-2016 Noon

Crossroads received close to 2″ of snow last night. Early this AM the entire trail system was gone over with the Tidd Tech Trail Tenderizer and loose snow has been stabilized but is not hard packed. I have not set track at this time as there is considerable blowing snow and there was other shoveling out to do at Crossroads. Although everything is ski-able some areas are wind swept and nearly bare. We have active drifting up by the observatory open areas and other meadows.

Nonetheless, if you can bare the cold and wind skate ski should be fine. If things go as planned classic track will be set late in the day and I may run the Tidd Tech on some areas to break drifts and capture drifted snow.

The Park was last groomed on 1/10/2016. Goals were to 1) Mix new powder snow from 1/9/2016 into ice and hard pack base. 2) Remove previously snow cover logs and branches from the trail. 3) Level the trail base. 4) Remove footprints made by hikers. All goals were accomplished.

Generally there is little snow depth after the recent warm temperatures, but the trails are still ski-able. Rock skis are recommended. Skate lanes were fair with occasional areas of bare spots and exposed rocks or ice. Track was difficult to set due the lack of snow, but is in fair condition. There are some bare and icy spots.

The campground road was groomed for skating and has the best conditions for skating. The green trail starting area loop near the shelter, parking area is poor and not ski-able.

The trails were last groomed on Jan 6, since then above freezing temperatures thawed and melted much of the snow Rain today has worsened the conditions. The trail snow is thin and soft and not suitable for skiing. To ski on it in this condition on Saturday would degrade the base with ruts that will freeze as temperatures drop and make it impossible to groom right after. Please stay off the trails on Saturday to give us a chance to re-groom after temperatures have fallen enough.

Trail Conditions – Fair to good, very good in re-groomed areas.

The double tracked portion of the Red Trail was regroomed today with the intention of wiping out the hiker and snowshoe tracks and firming up the pole plant areas, then resetting the track. The effort was a success in that the errant tracks are gone, pole plant areas have firmed up and a new track has been set. However the temp crept above the 32f mark so plans to work on the rest of the trails have been suspended til later. There are just a few spots where a little bare ground is showing, but they are easy to see and avoid.

Skiers are invited to inform hikers/snowshoers that groomed trails are for skiing only. Information on where to hike and snowshoe is available at the park nature center.

All skate trails were groomed today. Also tracks were reset on the Blue and Green trails. Trails can be a little bumpy is sections but that can only be solved with more snow. Otherwise trails are in Very Good condition.
