Were you tough enough to
conquer the bluff?? By
Margaret Carroll Over
1,100 athletes of all ages and abilities were tough enough on Sunday at the Door County Triathlon in Egg Harbor. With
two separate triathlon events, serious triathletes mingled with families and those of us who just wanted to test ourselves
and have a little fun. The hard working crew of volunteers was led by Race
Director Sean Ryan and Assistant Race Director Craig Congdon of Green Bay. Locally, the Sturgeon Bay YMCA had recruited
over 100 Door County volunteers to organize race packets, assist with logistics, lifeguard and even collect garbage at the
end of the day. Mary Heimann and her team of lifeguards kept participants safe during the 1.2 mile and ¼ miles
swims off Murphy Park, using kayaks, jet skis and surfboards. Bill Larsen, who patrolled the water in his pontoon boat
said, “It was a great race to watch, but that water is really
cold. I’m glad I’m on the boat.” With a record number of participants in the half iron event and sprint
events, the lifeguards did an outstanding job throughout the morning. Amy
Murray from Flint, Michigan celebrated her 42nd birthday biking 56 miles in a half iron relay. “I just signed
up to enjoy the race with my family, but by the middle of the bike course, something kicked in, and I pushed myself really
hard.” Fred Suchy from Bayside, WI regularly comes up to
the Triathlon to test himself against friends and family in Door County. “The half-iron was a tougher race this year,
but it’s a scenic course and the atmosphere is great,” he said. A
Sturgeon Bay native, Craig Parsons was a top 20 finisher in the half-iron even, and sprinted to the finish to cheers from
family and friends in the crowd. The finish line was a place of celebration for most athletes, and the "I
came and conquered" mentality lasted even after the awards ceremony. First
time triathlete Monica Gates from Edina, MN, swam the 1.2 mile leg of her relay to honor her friend Hayley. “Next
year, Hayley will be well enough to do the swim. Then I can have fun cheering her on,” she said. Buffy Andreae-Miller of Sturgeon Bay also came away from the race determined to compete
again. “I did the sprint relay, and I was amazed at how at the start, women were introducing themselves and keeping
each other calm. By the end of the race, I saw people hugging who were strangers in the morning, but had supported each
other through every leg of the race. It was really memorable.” According to race organizers next year’s
event will be split into a two day affair, with the sprint held on Saturday and the half-iron on Sunday. Sean Ryan is
optimistic: “We’re hoping to get 1,000 athletes each day.” Competitors are counting down days.
